Togo re-opens border with Ghana at Aflao

Aflao, Dec. 8, GNA – The Republic of Togo on Wednesday morning re-opened its side of the border with Ghana at Aflao, giving a major relief to hundreds of stranded travellers and traders at both sides of the frontier.

The unannounced closure of that side of the border on Tuesday left many stranded at both ends including local cooked food dealers who were moving their wares for sale mainly in Lome, the Togolese capital.

A visit by the GNA to the border this morning identified brisk and smooth movement of people and goods across.

Ghanaian security personnel at Aflao said they were not informed or given any reason for the closure at 0600 hours on Tuesday by their Togolese counterparts.

With a similar closure of their side of the border during the presidential re-run between the NPP and the NDC in the 2000 Election, local residents believed the closure was to prevent registered Ghanaians resident in Togo from participating in the election.
