Adjiringano (Tema), April 08, GNA – The Phase two of the Tema Municipal Assembly’s exercise to rid the city of filth was carried out today at Ashaiman, Adentah, Oyibi, Adjiringano and Bawaleshie. Other areas included Ashaley Botwe, Lashibi, and Adjei Kojo. The exercise, which started around 0600 hours, had the police, military, the fire service, students and all residents in the municipality participating.
Participation at Adentah and some areas was not encouraging, as the people complained of not being informed of the incoming exercise in time. Speaking to the press, the Municipal Chief Executive was impressed about the turn up in other areas and described the low turn up in some areas as the nature of human beings, who sometimes did not realize the importance in participating in voluntary work. He said the Assembly intended to intensify its education campaign and hoped people would change their attitudes towards the disposal of solid waste, so that the huge amount spent on it could be used for something else for the betterment of the municipality. He said the assembly’s bye-laws were also being reviewed to suit the modern trend, since the punitive measures in the old one was not deterrent enough to offenders.
In an interview the Public Relations Officer of the Assembly, Mr Frank Asante, he said to ensure its sustainability 14 electoral areas within the Tema township would undertake clean up exercises every week to make sure all the 54 electoral areas was covered by the end of the month.
He said the assembly was also embarking on projects to beautify the municipality and mentioned tree planting along the principal streets, as one of the measures. 8 April 06
