Tema, Dec. 26, GNA — Three employees of a company who stole metal scraps brought from Burkina Faso to Tema Port in transit to Europe and sold them at Ashaiman have been fined three million cedis each by the Tema circuit court ‘A’.
Nana Yaw Clement, Nana Yaw Samuel and Kwadwo Asiedu pleaded guilty and will go to jail for 18 months in default.
Chief Inspector Mary Assunta told the court presided over by Mr Charles Asiedu that on October 24, 2004 the Managing Director of Ste-Vilex Company based in Lome brought a truck load of scrap metal valued at 10 million cedis from Burkina Faso and Mali to Tema harbour in transit to Europe.
She said the four accused persons, one of them now at large, were employed to off load the scraps into a container at the port for export. At 1800 hrs. of that day, the complainant had information that one of the trucks was seen off-loading scraps at Ashaiman.
Chief Inspector Assunta said a report was made to the Ashaiman police and the truck was traced, with the accused off-loading the scrap metals and they were arrested. In their cautioned statement, they admitted the offence but explained that it was the supervisor who brought them to off-load the scraps.
