Thief pleads to be sent to jail

A 29-year old self-confessed drug addict on Wednesday pleaded with a Kumasi Circuit Court where he was standing trial for theft, to send him to prison to save him from getting killed.

Mustapha Moro claimed a criminal colleague of his had already been lynched by a mob and that he feared it could be his turn soon.

This is borne out of the fact that he could simply not do away with his stealing habit.

He was arrested by the police on July 4 for stealing cellular phones belonging to drivers and travelers at the Kumasi Central Market area.

Two of the stolen phones together with some SIM cards including those of the MTN, Tigo, Vodafone and Airtel networks were retrieved from him.

Some of his victims later identified the convict after his arrest.

The Court presided over by Mr. Justice William Boampong sentenced Moro to 14 years imprisonment in hard labour.**
