Right Reverend John Otoo, Anglican Diocesan Bishop of Sekondi, on Saturday called on the Ghana Bar and the Bench to perform their duties with integrity and honesty.
He also asked them to consider their positions as appointments by God and uphold truth and justice.
Rt. Rev. Otoo made the call at the fifth memorial anniversary of the late Justice Kweku Etrew Amua-Sekyi, former chairman of the National Reconciliation Commission, in Sekondi in the Western Region.
The clergyman admonished the Bar and the Bench not to jail innocent people for the sake of money.
He praised the late Amua-Sekyi and said: “heroes and achievers of our time must not be written off immediately. We thank God for the legacy, honesty, discipline and integrity he exhibited during his career and lifetime”.
Rt. Rev. Otoo said, the late Amua-Sekyi used his God given potentials to promote the welfare of the people.
A tribute read by a family friend, indicated that the late Justice was promoted to the Court of Appeal in 1986 and later to the Supreme Court.
The late Amua-Sekyi was a member of the OAU Administrative Tribunal in Addis Ababa-Ethiopia, chairman of the Discipline Committee of the General Legal Council, the Legal AId Committee and the Council of Law Reporting.
He retired in 1966 from the Supreme Court and later served on the Supreme Court of Gambia.
The late Amua-Sekyi served as chairman of the National Reconciliation Commission till its work ended in October 2004.
His involvement in activities of the Anglican Church culminated to his appointed as the chancellor of the Sekondi Diocese.
The late Justice Amua-Sekyi was quoted as saying, “From the beginning I worked hard to prove that not all judges were lazy and corrupt. I believe I made a good impression on my former colleagues at the Bar.”**
