Tema roads to be asphalted

Tema, Aug. 5, GNA – Mr Kempis Ofosuware, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), on Thursday gave the assurance that most roads in the Metropolis would be asphalted within the year.

Mr Ofosuware gave the assurance during an interaction with stakeholders mostly drivers from the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union and other co-operative unions at the Tema Main Station to brief them on the state of roads in Tema.

He said funds had been released for the project to take off.

Mr Ofosuware said on the assumption of office, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government realized that Tema roads had not seen any major rehabilitation for the past 40 years and were in deplorable state.

He said his administration made assessment of the state of all roads in the Metropolis and the report was submitted to the government, and as a result, construction works would soon begin.

He reiterated that the new road tolls levy introduced by the government had enabled it

to raise more funds for construction projects.

The MCE said new traffic lights were being installed all over the metropolis and pleaded with stakeholders to bear with the Assembly since some of the roads may be closed and there would be diversions which could create inconveniences.

Mr Stephen Attipoe, Urban Roads Engineer of the Metropolis, said roads in all the three constituencies namely; Kpong-Katamanso, Tema East and West would be rehabilitated adding that Lashibi in Tema West had already seen some road construction.

He explained that Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Nestle, Meridian and Republic roads, among others, would be asphalted.

Mr Attipoe stated that the Meridian road will be constructed all the way to Nungua.

He said most of the construction works would be carried out in phases, and emphasized that contractors would only be paid after the satisfactory completion of jobs.

Mr Attipoe advised drivers to be good ambassadors of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and bear with the government since the aim of the roads project was to provide comfort for all.
