Professor Christopher Akumfi-Ameyaw, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has noted that poor reading habit has become a nation-wide problem with school children. Professor Akumfi-Ameyaw said this when he toured some communities in the Brong Ahafo region and interacted with headmasters and headteachers at New Techiman, Tanoso, Tadieso-Bomiri, Kutabom, Hansua, Akrofrom, Krobo and Jama-Temponem at the weekend. He had earlier visited Nkwaeso, Agosa, Faaman, Bonkwae and Nsuta as part of his tour of the Techiman District. At New Techiman, the headmaster of the Islamic Kindergarten, Primary and Junior Secondary Schools, Mr Daniel F. Donkor, disclosed that his schools were in dire need of Ghanaian and English Language and Agricultural Science textbooks. He expressed concern about the unwillingness of parents to provide tables and chairs for their children in kindergarten classes one and two.
Mr Donkor attributed this to the lukewarm attitude of Muslims towards the education of their children and complained that parents usually ask permission for their wards to accompany them to farm while the children have also developed interest in video shows .
