Teachers’ deaths send fears among them

Suhum (ER), Sept. 9, GNA – Teachers in the Suhum-Kraboa-Coalter District of the Eastern Region, have been griped with fear following recent deaths of 16 teachers in the district.

Some members of the district branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) made this known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the burial of one colleague, the late Mr Oppong Ankrah of the Kukua Junior Secondary School on Saturday. According to them, over 16 members had died between January and July, this year, in the district, adding that, three of them, Mr Thomas Okyere, Mr Boateng Aseibu and Miss Augustina Larbi, were yet to be buried.

They claimed that most of the teachers died after some brief moments of illness, while others allegedly died due to some financial and health challenges.

A member of the GNAT said some of the deceased teachers could not seek medical care, when the felt sick because of financial constraints. He recalled a similar trend of deaths recorded among teachers four years ago when a record of 12 teachers died within a fortnight, thereby compelling the teachers to organize a 90-day prayer and fasting to seek divine protection.
