Tamale downpour: Woman, 59, dead

A 59-year-old woman identified as Hajia Fati Bapuni has been confirmed dead after heavy rains in Tamale and some other districts of the Northern Region on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses told Class FM’s Northern regional correspondent, Mohammed Gadafi, that the deceased said she was going to pick her child from school. However, she was swept away by the strong current of the floods on her arrival at the Gariba Lodge Main Gutter area.

The rain, which started at 11am on Tuesday July 25, left several suburbs of the Tamale metropolis and some other settlements in the Sagnarigu district submerged.

The communities affected include Gumani, Nyenshegu, Bulpela, Sheshigu, Fuo, Kalpohin, and Gariba Lodge area. The Karaga, Gushegu, Salaga and Bimbilla districts of the Northern Region have all been cut off from the regional capital, Tamale.
