Suspect shoots policeman dead in Kumasi

Kumasi, July 11, GNA – A policeman attached to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) police station whose name was not immediately available, died last Friday at Kotei near the University after he was shot by a suspect he had gone to arrest.

The suspect, whose name was also not available, was alleged to have inflicted machete wounds on a family member in a brawl over a land dispute and was being sought for by the police.

According to reliable sources at Kotei, the suspect bolted after shooting the policeman but was later arrested and detained in custody. The sources said the extended family of the suspect had been feuding over ownership of the land situated at Deduako, near Kotei.

Matters grew worse recently between the factions, culminating in a clash between them on the disputed land where the suspect allegedly slashed a member of the rival party with a machete.

He thereafter went into hiding to avoid being arrested by the police to whom a complaint had already been lodged by the other faction. The sources said it was when the policeman was despatched to arrest the suspect at his house at Kotei on Friday that he shot and killed him and took to his heels. 11 July 04
