Accra, July 9, GNA – A day’s sanitation seminar was on Wednesday organized for about 20 basic schools in the Ayawaso Sub-Metropolitan District with a call on everyone to help the government control the deteriorating sanitation situation in the country.
School children were also called upon to play their part in helping to save the situation by not throwing litter around and observing personal hygiene.
The Reverend Samuel Kyei Poku, Executive Director of the Sanitation Crusaders Foundation-Ghana, a local environmental non-governmental organization, made the call in Accra at the seminar, on the theme: “The Involvement of the Youth in the Promotion of Good Sanitation”.
It was also attended by headteachers and members of environmental clubs in and around Kotobabi, Abavana and Nima.
Resource persons from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the Health and Sanitation Unit and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) educated participants on sanitation and the need to keep a clean environment. Rev. Kyei Poku said since the government alone could not deal with situation which seemed to be getting out of hand, everyone must join in the crusade and help save the situation.
He said the Foundation intends to take its crusade to keep the environment clean to other regions after it had fully covered Accra. He appealed to the city authorities to ensure that dustbins were put at vantage points in the city.
Nana Amaning Opinteng, Krontihene of Akyem Anyinase in the Eastern Region, who chaired the seminar advised the children to desist from throwing waste into gutters.
He also urged them to educate their parents and peers on the proper disposal of waste.
