Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles have been eliminated from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Sudan in their final group match.
The loss in Sudan followed a 1-0 opening game defeat to Senegal, leaving Nigeria bottom of the group without a single point or goal scored. The back-to-back defeats mark one of the heaviest combined group-stage losses in the team’s CHAN history.
Led by coach Chelle Éric Sékou, the Super Eagles struggled to find their rhythm in the tournament, with defensive lapses and missed chances proving costly. Sudan, on the other hand, dominated the decisive encounter, capitalising on Nigeria’s errors to seal a convincing win.
The result has triggered disappointment among fans, with many calling for a review of the team’s preparations and tactics ahead of future competitions. For now, Nigeria’s hopes of CHAN glory will have to wait for another edition.
