Sunyani moves to control traffic jams

The Sunyani Municipal Assembly has stepped up moves to control vehicular traffic congestion and unauthorized parking in Sunyani, as the municipality grows into a Metropolitan status.

City authorities said inventory at the Central Business District (CBD of the Brong-Ahafo Regional capital had been taken and works on 1,058 parking spaces at the CBD and other identifiable areas would start soon.

On completion, the assembly has projected to generate GHC609,408 as revenue every year as drivers will use the facilities at a reduced fee.

Mr James Amoo-Gottfried, Sunyani Municipal Engineer who said this at a as a meeting organised by the Municipal Road Unit of the Assembly to brief stakeholders on the proposed traffic management measures within the CBD, said the Municipal Assembly would fix the fees for the parking.

He said the Assembly would engage private operators to manage the facilities.

Mr Amoo-Gottfried said initially 0.30 pesewas would be charged for an hour spent at the parking lot and added that more traffic wardens would be engaged to ensure adequate security.

He said the pace at which Sunyani was developing needed a radical approach in controlling vehicular congestion.
