Suicide helpline gets busy as Ghana is gripped by surge in deaths

Ghana’s capital Accra was hit by at least four suicide deaths last week alone prompting the creation of a helpline to counsel those who need help.

Ghana’s Mental Health Authority disclosed that in four days after the helpline’s creation, 30 people have called to seek help.

“Some of them call in and they tell you they need help and the line drops, so we make the efforts to get back to know those who genuinely need help and we help them,” Kweku Brobbey, spokesperson of the Mental Health Authority told local media Joy News.

“When we call them back we get to know those who need advice and we advise them to go to the right place we know they would get the desired help,” he added.

When we call them back we get to know those who need advice and we advise them to go to the right place we know they would get the desired help. The surge started last month at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus in the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi where an 18-year-old female student committed suicide with a rope.

This was followed by another incident on March 8 at the University of Ghana campus in the capital Accra where another female student was suspected to have jumped to her death from the fourth floor of her apartment building.

Two other suspected suicide cases were recorded in Accra the same week and another two in other towns in the country bringing the reported number to 10 in the past month.

The incidents were widely reported by the Ghanaian media and shared widely on social media by Ghanaians who expressed fear.
