Students of the Cape Coast Technical go on rampage

Cape Coast, Aug. 2 GNA – Students of the Cape Coast Technical Institute on Monday morning went on rampage and destroying school property and vehicles sent there for repairs.

The students, who started the destruction at dawn, set fire to the school old Bedford truck and a wooden structure; broke louver blades of some of the classrooms and store and smashed the windscreen of the School’s Kia truck and other vehicles, which were sent there for repairs.

Mr Mohammed Orleans Esson, Headmaster of the Institute, who spoke to the GNA, said the school authorities had information last Friday that the students had planned to burn down the school because they had not been provided with some school items and would, therefore, not write the end of year examination.

He said he immediately informed the Police of the intended action of the students and they started patrolling the school, however in the early hours of Monday the students entered the school through the school park and began burning the bushes and later vandalised the school property.

He said nine students including two females have been arrested and a committee has also been set to investigate the case.

Mr Esson commended the Police and the Ghana National Fire Service for their timely intervention and stressed that the situation was under control and the students would start their examinations on Tuesday. Master Richard Boakye, a second year student of the School, told the books and hostel fees but failed to supply the items.

The nine students arrested are helping the Police in their investigations.
