Asokore (Ash), Jan. 14, GNA – A total of forty-two students from the Asokore Traditional Area in Ashanti, are to benefit from scholarship awards under the Dr S K B Asante Educational Fund this year. The total amount involved in the scholarship for the 42 students, stands at 25 million cedis and covers students from the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), Senior Secondary Schools (SSS), tertiary and technical institutions.
The Fund was established single-handedly in 1990 by Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante, paramount chief of the Asokore Traditional Area, in a bid to promote quality education in the area.
The scholarship scheme and award packages were announced on behalf of Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante at Asokore on Friday, at the close of a two-week voluntary classes for students of the Asokore Traditional area and its satellite communities.
The programme was sponsored and organized by the paramount chief of the area and implemented by a group of student volunteers from the Asante Students Union of the University of Ghana, Legon. Nana Krobea Asante said since education was crucial to development, he would personally explore all avenues to motivate students in his traditional area to strive for greater laurels in education and employable skills at all levels.
In an address, Mr Richard Nimo, leader of the 10-member group of Volunteers who offered the free lessons said 100 students benefited from the classes.
The classes were in the subject areas of Mathematics, English, Social Studies and integrated science.
He commended the paramount chief for initiating such a bold step to promote quality education free of charge to his students. A quiz competition that was organized to mark the end of the two-week classes in which five schools participated saw Trinity JSS emerge as winner.
The second place went to Methodist JSS. The third position was occupied by the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) JSS, with the fourth place going to Saint Paul’s JSS and fifth position by Ahamadiyya JSS.
