Nkoranza (B/A), June 24, GNA – Madam Martha Anang, a professional counsellor and mathematics teacher at the University of Cape Coast, has urged students to be resourceful and cultivate the habit of reading more books, to comprehend lessons to enhance their academic performance. She said the technological world of today has brought to light that “information and knowledge are not obtained only from teachers in the classrooms”, and that students’ research in libraries and Information Technology Communication (ICT) centres, allowed them to explore more information and understand issues at wider levels. Madam Anang, Author of ‘Knowledge is Built in Bits’, was addressing students of Nkoranza Technical Institute in the Brong Ahafo Region, at a day’s seminar to share her personal experiences and explain the contents of the book to them.
She stressed the need for students to be serious with their education and eschew all sorts of social activities that could have adverse effect on their education. Madam Anang, who is also the director of SMARTGATE Company Limited, a Cape Coast-based NGO, expressed concern about how students apportioned blame to their teachers if they failed their final examinations. “It is their responsibility to explore for more knowledge after classes and to build upon the tuition they receive,” she stressed. Madam Anang deplored the negative practices and attitude of some students who waited for the release of examination time table before they embarked on serious studies, and advised that since ‘Rome was not built in a day’ it was important that they studied hard enough to be able to face examinations.
The professional counsellor and mathematician reiterated that it was through education that the gap between the rich man’s child and poor man’s child could be closed and to become responsible citizens. Madam Anang appealed to the students to be disciplined, God fearing and law abiding, to enable them to lead decent lives without blemish, and God would also bless them to be successful in life. Mr. Albert Adusei, Principal of the Institute, commended Madam Anang for her visit to interact with and encourage the students in their education. He advised the students to adhere to the teachings in the book and also to allow God to take control of their lives, so that they would become successful.
Mr. Imoro Mohammed, Guidance and Counselling Coordinator of the School, dismissed speculations by some students that education in a technical institution had a limitation, saying, students who are determined to rise to any level in education should move forward to acquire the desired standards and levels. Mr. Francis Azieve Owusu, Senior Prefect, commended the authorities of the institute for the seminar, which enabled them to share views to guide them and gave the assurance that, they would live up to the teachings received to become useful citizens of the country. 24 June 10
