Tema, Aug. 22, GNA – A 28-year-old computer science student who used his acquaintance to steal his friend’s Barclays Bank cheques and managed to cash a total of 7.8 million cedis has been remanded into custody by the Tema Circuit Court ‘A’.
Nii Okaidjah pleaded not guilty on three counts of stealing and will reappear on September 6, 2004.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Christopher Quaicoe told the court presided over by Mr Charles Asiedu that the complainant and the accused are friends, and the accused capitalised on their friendship and stole two Barclays Bank cheque leaflets from the complainant.
He said on June 1, 2004, the complainant went to the Tema branch of the Barclays Bank to check his accounts, and found that on May 28, 2004, cheque number 514299 with face value of 2.5 million cedis had been cashed from his accounts.
Chief Inspector Quaicoe said on May 31, 2004, another cheque number 514300 with face value of 5.3 million cedis was also cashed, adding, the complainant suspected the accused and caused his arrest by the police. He said in the accused caution statement, he confessed and refunded four million cedis to the Railways and Harbour police.
