STMA to give Sekondi-Takoradi roads facelift soon

Authorities of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) have said plans are advanced to repair all the deplorable roads in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis to befit an oil city.

Interacting with the media on the state of the road network, Captain (RTD) Anthony Cudjoe, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), attributed the fast deterioration of the roads mainly to the heavy duty trucks that ply them.

However, he said some of the roads have been mapped out for immediate attention as soon as the rains subside.

Capt. Cudjoe explained that the Assembly had not shirked its responsibility to allow the roads to run down but had financial constraints, which were being addressed at a higher level because it involved a lot of funding.

Mr. William Donkor, Metropolitan Roads Engineer, said the delay in the release of funds for road maintenance had compounded the problem.

The Roads Engineer also mentioned oil leakage, washing of vehicles on the roads and heavy rainfall as also contributing to the problem.

The Assembly, he explained, had drawn both short and long term plans to tackle the problems holistically with terminals being constructed for the parking of vehicles to ease traffic in the city.

Additionally, specific routines would be identified for the heavy duty trucks to ply, he said, and urged the Management of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to control the trucks plying their area of operation.**
