SMC condemns child labour at Akuapim

Akuapim (Ash), Aug 4, GNA-The School Management Committee (SMC) of Akuapim basic schools has condemned the increasing rate at which parents allow school children to cart cocoa beans, food crops and tap palm wine instead of encouraging them to stay in school.

The committee noted that many parents in the area behave out of illiteracy and ignorance.

The SMC was addressing an educational forum organised by the Atwima district education directorate at Akuapim near Mfensi on Ashanti on Tuesday.

Nana Abraham Asiedu, regent of the town and chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), expressed the community’s appreciation to the government and the district assembly for putting up an eight-bedroom teachers living accommodation.

Mr Benjamin Obuobi-Addo, the unit committee chairman, said the community would put up a decent public place of convenience and urinals for the school by the beginning of next academic year to improve the school’s sanitation.

Mr James Owusu-Ansah, the headteacher, called on the parents to instil discipline and virtues in their children and also monitor and supervise their studies.
