Sibi(V/R), May 30, GNA – Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) from Nkwanta and Kadjebi have been mobilized to provide water to Sibi, a town near Damanko in the Nkwanta District to ease a critical water shortage affecting the people.
Water shortage, a perennial problem in the town was said to be particularly severe this year resulting in teachers, health and agricultural workers deserting their post.
Mr K.K.D. Nazar, Nkwanta District Fire Officer told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkwanta that the sight of humans and livestock struggling for water from pot-holes on the streets and ditches was disheartening.
He said the nearest source of potable water was six kilometres away at Damanko.
Mr Nazar pointed out that the situation had disrupted school activities as pupils, students and teachers go out searching for water. He called on the authorities to act quickly to prevent the area from being engulfed by any waterborne disease. An official at the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), told the GNA that the problem was due to the drying up of boreholes in the area every dry season. 30 May 06
