Severe storm wreaks havoc on Atwima communities

Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds had wreaked havoc on four Atwima-Mponua communities – Otaakrom, Barniekrom, Atwima-Takoradi and Akorabourkrom.

Dozens of people have been displaced as a number of buildings have either collapsed or had their roofs ripped off under the impact of the storm.

No injuries had been recorded so far.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), led by the District Coordinator, Mr. Osei Asibey, had toured the affected communities to assess the extent of the damage.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that things were really bad.

The widespread devastation, he said, should bring to the fore the need to work together with renewed determination to stop the reckless cutting-down of trees, which hitherto served as windbreaks.

Many of the victims were being housed by friends, relatives and neighbours, whose property escaped the destruction.

He gave the assurance that NADMO would mobilize some relief items to make life a bit bearable for the displaced people.
