‘Sanitation issues must not be taken lightly’

Mrs Rita Odoley Sowah, the La-Dadekotopon Municipal Chief Executive, has said environmental sanitation is of paramount concern to the Assembly and offenders of the sanitation laws would be prosecuted.

She said, to this end, the La-Dadekotopon Assembly (LaDMA) was not leaving any stone unturned to sensitise the people on the importance of observing good hygienic.

Mrs Sowah said this at a day’s forum held by the LaDMA to sensitize the people in the municipality on the need to adhere to environmental cleanliness.

She said the Assembly has embarked on a campaign against unhygienic environment to ensure that the cholera outbreak that occurred in the area last year would not happen again.

She said the environmental sanitation bye-laws of the Assembly would be implemented to the letter to clamp down on offenders whilst public education would continue.

Mrs Sowah said: “It is of paramount importance to dialogue with the people to solicit their views on the best approach to solving problems.”

She urged households to ensure that they provide toilet facilities in their homes before renting them out to prevent open defecation, and that, they should disabuse their minds that such facilities should be provided by city authorities for the public.

She urged all “to put their shoulders to the wheel and observe a clean environment.”

Mr Felix Acquaye, the LaDMA Environmental Health Officer, said the Assembly was implementing a sanitation action plan to address the challenges of managing solid, liquid and hazardous industrial wastes.

He said there was the need for education and enforcement of the laws to ensure that the people comply with it.

Participants at the forum urged the Assembly to construct and rehabilitate the roads in the area.
