Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director, Ibrahim Saanie Daara, has hailed CK Akonnor’s appointment as head coach of Kenyan giants Gor Mahia, describing it as a golden opportunity for the ex-Black Stars boss to reignite his coaching career.
The 51-year-old Ghanaian tactician recently signed a two-year deal with the Nairobi-based club, marking his official return to management since parting ways with the Ghana national team.
Akonnor, a former captain of the Black Stars, previously held high-profile roles at Hearts of Oak**, Ashanti Gold, and Asante Kotoko, and also led Kotoko in the CAF Champions League. His new role with Kenya’s most decorated football club signals both a fresh chapter and a challenge on the continental stage.

Speaking to Luv FM, Saanie Daara expressed optimism about what the future holds for Akonnor.
“We wish him the best and hope that he can make the best of it since this is a big opportunity for CK to somehow relaunch his career. Since he left the Black Stars, he hasn’t had a job,” Daara noted.
He revealed that although Akonnor had received coaching offers since his national team stint ended, many of them weren’t the right fit.
“He’s had offers, but some were not suitable. With this opportunity to go outside and make his name, I think it’s good news for him to do that and perhaps come back into recruitment for some of the top jobs,” he added.
Akonnor becomes the first Ghanaian to manage Gor Mahia, who boast a rich footballing heritage and 20 Kenyan Premier League titles. His appointment has been met with optimism by fans and pundits who hope his experience will elevate the club’s ambitions both locally and in continental competitions.
