Rural communities advised against water pollution

Cape Coast, March 22, GNA – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), on Monday advised people in rural communities to refrain from polluting sources of drinking water to promote their health.

Ms Victoria Tettey, a field project officer of ADRA, who made the call at the opening of a ‘training workshop on water and sanitation’ at Cape Coast on Monday, noted that some water borne diseases that attacked people in rural areas were caused by contaminated water.

The USAID sponsored the workshop, which was organised by the ADRA in collaboration with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA). Fifty participants drawn from communities in the Cape Coast municipality and Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem and Mfantsiman districts were attending the workshop.

The workshop that would discuss role of women in development, health, hygiene and provision of portable water among others was aimed at ensuring maximum benefit from the installation of water and sanitation points in these communities by ADRA.

She urged the people to undertake sound environmental practices

The Relief Agency has embarked on a programme to ensure that 300,000 rural people in the targeted areas of the Central Region have access to health, nutrition, potable water and sanitation facilities in.

According to her, the participants would be made aware about the need to mobilise funds locally to meet cost of repairs of water pumping equipment like boreholes and the hand-dug wells, which are fitted with pumps.
