EIGHT people died yesterday when the bus on which they were travelling hit a tipper truck at Sapeiman, near Nsawam.
Three of the deceased, including the driver of the bus belonging to the Kingdom Transport Services (KTS), died on the spot while five others, including a one-and-a-half-year-old baby, died later at the Nsawam Government Hospital.
The Commander of the Tesano Police Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU), Superintendent Yaw Amponsah, said the deceased were travelling from Bawku on the bus with registration number GR 7669S, to Accra when the accident occurred.
According to him, an eye witness said the driver of the KTS bus, in an attempt to overtake the tipper truck, with registration number, GT 4363 Q, miscalculated and hit the back of the truck.
One of the deceased has been identified as Abuduulaye Tahiru, a Nigerien. The bodiies of three of the deceased, have been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra while the rest have been sent to the Nsawam Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
Thirty-two of the passengers who are in very critical conditions, have been admitted at the same hospital. Superintendent Amponsah appealed to all road users, especially drivers, to observe road safety regulations.
He said when drivers adhere to road safety regulations, it will go a long way to reduce the number of road accidents in the country.
On his part, the Commander of the Central MTTU, Superintendent Victor Tandoh, expressed concern about the high rate of road accidents in the country.
