Nungua (GAR), June 05, GNA – The Maritime Studies Department of the Regional Maritime Academy (RMA) in collaboration with the University of Ghana, Legon, is to introduce a Master of Arts degree in Port and Shipping Administration.
This followed the high standard of training at the RMA, which had made it the preferred institution for candidates of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in the West Africa sub region. Captain Aaron Obeng Turkson, Principal of the RMA, announced this at the graduation parade of 250 students at Nungua near Accra the weekend.
Mr Bala Jahumpa, Secretary of State for Works, Construction and Infrastructure of the Republic of the Gambia and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the RMA, reviewed the parade.
He said, as a result of the high standard of the Academy Ghana became one of the first African countries to be placed on the initial “White List” of the IMO, in 2001.
Mr Jahumpa called on African states to strive to improve education for the progress of the continent and urged the lecturers and staff to continue with their good work.
Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, Minister of Harbours and Railway, expressed Ghana’s commitment to help in improving training and living conditions of the staff and students.
He commended the authorities for the paramilitary discipline offered the graduates, which was relevant for seafarers.
The Academy was established in 1993 by Ghana, Cameroon, the Gambia, Nigeria, Liberia, and Sierra Leone for the training of personnel for the maritime/fishing and ancillary industries.
