Researchers plan for agricultural development in Upper West

Wa, March 24, GNA – The Research-Extension Farmer Linkage Committee (RELC) of the Savannah Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) has held a

two-day planning session at Wa to draw a composite regional action plan for agricultural development in the Upper West Region. The session reviewed the performance of the districts, discussed their reports and problems and grouped them into; on-station research, on-farm demonstrations and verification training and extension and policy credit and marketing and brainstormed on their solutions. It was attended by District Directors of Agriculture, sectional heads of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) in the region, representatives of Agribusinesses in the region and agricultural extension agents.

The primary aim of RELC is to create a bridge between research, extension farmers and Agribusiness, to make research and extension demand-driven.

Dr. Saaka Buah, Co-ordinator of RELC said it has been found out that farmers refuse to adopt research findings to increase their crop yields because they were usually imposed on them.

He said RELC, therefore, encourages farmers’ active participation in order to bring decision-making in technology development and dissemination closer to them.
