Former president Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings has described the relocation of the seat of government from the Osu Castle to Flagstaff House as timely – but called for more trees to be planted.
In praising President Mahama for the well-timed move, the former president lambasted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under then-president John Agyekum Kufuor for failing to plant enough trees at the presidency.
“We may need a few more trees, the NPP did not care much for trees but hope the NDC will do better by bringing in some cool green environment,” he said.
Former president Rawlings who was among other dignitaries including some members of the clergy grace the official launch of the relocation of the OSU Castle to the flag staff house in Accra, tells Gold News on the sidelines that there is a way in which trees demonstrate a sense of responsibility and compassion of government.
He argued there was no way trees could have compromised the security in any way.
The elated former president Rawlings said: “I feel very disappointed about what they (NPP) has done on the central part of the road to the airport.”
He emphasised that for the psychological effect one derives and the soothing effect from green, trees and shades “it was not prudent for the NPP to destroy the trees.”
