Sunyani (B/A), May 17, GNA – A severe rainstorm that struck St. James Seminary/Secondary School in Sunyani last Tuesday ripped off the roofing of a dormitory accommodating 105 students.
None of the students got hurt as they were then studying in their classrooms but damage caused is estimated at 250 million cedis. Personal belongings of the students, including books, food items, and boxes, among others, were destroyed in the rain. When the Ghana News Agency visited the school, several trees were also seen uprooted by the storm, while the roof of the affected dormitory, mangled with broken boards, were scattered about 150 metres away inside a cassava farm.
The Reverend Father Alex Ebo Ansu, Rector of the school thanked God that none of the students got hurt but appealed to the Ministry of Education, Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and NGOs to assist as some of the students are preparing for their final examinations.
When contacted the Sunyani Municipal Co-ordinator of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Anan-Frimpong said the organisation had provided 50 student mattresses and 20 blankets to help mitigate the trauma of the students.
He said the Sunyani Municipal Assembly had also pledged to provide 16 packets of roofing sheets for the re-roofing of the building. Meanwhile the affected students are putting up in the seminary dormitory on the campus. 17 May 04
