Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has rejected suggestions that his record has been undermined by the Black Stars’ 4-2 defeat by The Gambia, insisting the result does not make him a loser.
Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday as The Gambia scored four times to complete a stunning comeback in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The loss leaves Ghana without a point from their opening two Group C matches and has intensified scrutiny of Queiroz, whose side have made a poor start to their qualifying campaign.
Asked about his credentials after the defeat, the Portuguese coach pointed to his record in international football.
“I’m still the coach with the record for most wins in international football. This result doesn’t make me a loser,” Queiroz said.
The comments came after Queiroz had indicated that he would be prepared to step down if the Ghana Football Association believed his resignation would help resolve the issues affecting Ghana football.
“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation,” he said.
Ghana appeared to be in a strong position after moving two goals ahead against The Gambia, but their advantage quickly disappeared as the visitors turned the match around and claimed all three points.
The result followed a 2-0 defeat by Cote d’Ivoire in Bouake in Ghana’s opening fixture, leaving the Black Stars facing a difficult route to qualification for the continental tournament.
Queiroz returned to lead Ghana after the team’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His principal task was to guide the Black Stars to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, but the campaign has so far produced two defeats.
Ghana had already missed the 2025 AFCON, making qualification for the 2027 tournament a significant target. The latest setback has increased the pressure on Queiroz and raised further questions about whether he will remain in charge.
Despite the difficult start, Queiroz’s remarks underline his belief that his experience and record remain relevant as he attempts to reverse Ghana’s fortunes.
The Ghana Football Association must now assess the situation before the remaining qualifiers. The Black Stars require a substantial improvement in results to revive their hopes of reaching the 2027 tournament.
