Carlos Queiroz says he would be the first to resign as Ghana head coach if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) believes his departure would provide a solution to the country’s football problems.
The Portuguese manager was speaking after Ghana suffered a 4-2 defeat by The Gambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
Ghana had taken control of the match by building a two-goal lead, but The Gambia completed a dramatic comeback with four unanswered goals. The defeat was the Black Stars’ second in succession in Group C and has increased pressure on Queiroz.
Asked about his position during his post-match news conference, Queiroz said: “If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation.”
Queiroz was reappointed by the GFA earlier this month after guiding Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At the time, the association pointed to his international experience and understanding of the team when confirming his new mandate.
Ghana face uphill battle in qualifying campaign
The loss to The Gambia leaves Ghana without a point from their first two Group C fixtures. They had opened the campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Cote d’Ivoire in Bouake.
The latest result is a major setback for the Black Stars, who missed the 2025 AFCON and began this qualifying campaign seeking a return to the continental competition.
Before Tuesday’s match, Queiroz had called for an attacking display from his side. He said Ghana needed to control possession and approach the game positively, while also asking supporters to back the players available to him.
Instead, Ghana surrendered a two-goal advantage on home soil and now face a difficult route towards qualification for the 2027 tournament.
The GFA will decide whether Queiroz remains in charge, with Ghana needing to recover from two defeats in their opening fixtures and revive their campaign in the matches that remain.
