Pupil teacher on bail for embezzling health scheme funds

Abetifi, Aug. 14, GNA – A 58-year primary school teacher from Ankomah was on Thursday granted a 3,000 GH cedis bail with one surety by a magistrate court at Abertifi for embezzling 1,493.60 Ghana cedis. Lawrence Diawoo, the accused, collected the money being premium from clients of the Kwahu South District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme during the 2006/2007 health insurance year. Mrs Lydia Aklamanu, who presided over the court, said officials of the District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme instituted a civil action against Diawoo on November 21, 2007 for his failure to account for the money. She said judgement was entered against him based on his plea but failed to pay the money to the scheme. The accused later went into hiding but was found at Hweehwee where he was arrested and brought before the court. Mrs Aklamanu said Diawoo pleaded to the court to be given some time to pay the money. He would re-appear on August 20, 2008.
