Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique says his side are still some way from reaching their best level, despite winning eight consecutive matches and reclaiming top spot in Ligue 1.
PSG’s latest victory came on Monday evening, when they beat Lyon 2-0 to continue a strong run that has also included notable Champions League wins over Manchester City and Barcelona.
The Spanish manager, however, does not want his players to peak at this stage of the campaign. Enrique has identified April 2027 as the approximate point at which he expects PSG to be operating at full capacity.
“Have we reached cruising speed? No, it’s only the start of the season. The road is very long. We are a reliable, resilient team, and we are competitive all the time. Sometimes we lose and sometimes we win, but we are always looking to win. This is not the time to be at 100%. I don’t want us to be at 100% right now. This is our usual rhythm, but we want to be at 100% around April, more or less,” the Spaniard told the press.
The current sequence represents a marked improvement after an unconvincing opening to PSG’s Ligue 1 campaign. They have since moved back to the top of the domestic table while also producing results that have strengthened their position among Europe’s leading teams.
Their Champions League form has been particularly significant. PSG recorded 4-2 victories against Manchester City and Barcelona, results that highlighted their ability to perform against prominent opponents on the continental stage.
The win against Lyon then extended their run to eight successive victories, but Enrique believes the team still has substantial scope to improve as the season develops.
Rather than assessing his side only through its recent results, the manager said PSG must maintain their competitive approach while continuing to build towards a higher level of performance.
“Have we reached cruising speed?” Enrique asked, before stressing that there was still a long road ahead and that this was not the point at which he wanted his team to be performing at 100%.
PSG are the reigning two-time European champions and have already shown their strength against major opposition in this season’s Champions League. Despite that progress, Enrique’s target is for the team to reach its maximum level later in the campaign, around April 2027.
