President Mahama pledges to work towards regional integration

President Mahama says Ghana will continue to play an important role towards the integration process in the West African sub region.

According to the president, Africa can only achieve its full potential when it is able to harness all of its economic potential. President Mahama made the remarks when he presented credentials to the new Nigerian high commissioner to Ghana Adewola Oluseyi Onafonokan on Thursday morning.

He said Ghana under his leadership will continue to enhance the economic relationship with Nigeria which he described as the biggest economic player in the African sub region.

He said Ghana had a strong working relationship with former Nigerian High Commissioners have served in Ghana and that he is hopeful that the fruitful relationship will continue unabated.

“Nigeria is the largest economy in our West African sub-region and has a certain natural leadership role that it must pay. Ghana is willing to support Nigeria at all times to be able to play that role,” he said.

President Mahama said this will help the two countries integrate their economies and break the business barriers that their people face.

For his part, the new High Commissioner Adewola Oluseyi Onafonokan said he will work hard to improve the economic abilities of both nations.

He said the friendly ties between the two countries have a very rich history and he will work to improve the friendship further.

“Nigeria and its people really hold Ghana in a very, very high esteem. We are very proud of our relationship with Ghana and we pledge that we will do everything to support the Republic of Ghana,” he asserted.
