Kwamoso (E/R), May 07, GNA – Poor publicity about the re-opening of the voters’ register is blamed for the low turn out in the rural communities.
This came to light when the Ghana News Agency visited some of the registration centres in the Akuapem North District on Saturday. The Kwamoso Presbyterian Primary Registration Centre that is responsible for the registration of voters from seven other polling stations registered nine persons on the first day of the exercise and four voters on the second.
The Adawso Church of Pentecost Registration Centre, which is responsible for registration of voters from six other polling stations, registered two persons on the first day of the exercise and four on the second day.
The Tinkong United Primary Registration Centre responsible for the registration of voters from four other polling stations registered 9 persons on the first day and 17 people on the second. The registration officers at these centres blamed poor publicity given to the registration exercise as being responsible for the low turnout.
The Tinkong United Primary Registration Centre was able to register 17 people on the second day because the Assemblyman for Tinkong Electoral Area, Alhaji Mohammed Muftao, went from house to house on house to house and urged people to register.
Alhaji Muftao appealed to the Electoral Commission to allow the registration exercise to take place at the polling stations to help reduce the distance and time that the people would have to travel from other polling stations to get to the registration centres. 07 May 06
