Accra, (Greater Accra Region) 16 Oct. The People’s Convention Party (PCP) has protested against the deadline given to the committee investigating the award of a 570 million-cedi contract to Union Electrik (Nigeria) Limited by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). In a statement issued in Accra yesterday the PCP said it hails the ministry’s decision to set up the three-member committee. However, the party said it is convinced that the committee cannot do any satisfactory work within the time available to it and suggested that the probe should be given at least, three months. The PCP urged the Ministry of Mines and Energy to extend the time to enable the committee to deal with the substantive issues of whether ECG followed laid-down procedure in the award of the contract and whether it carried out sufficient background check on Union Electrik. The PCP wondered why in spite of its proven competence in the refurbishment of burnt transformers, Bertini Romeo Bergamo (BRB), a local electrical engineering company, was by-passed in the award of the contract. “The public interest will also be served if the committee will find out why the advice of an Irish consultant against the deal with Union Electrik was ignored by the management of ECG”, the statement said.
