Polio immunization begins next Thursday

Ghanaian children under the age of five will from Thursday, September 18 to Saturday, September 20 undergo a first round of immunization against poliomyelitis.

About 50,000 health workers will be involved in the exercise, TV3 gathers.

At the launch of the 2014 Polio National Immunization Days (NIDs) in Accra on Thursday, it was noted that Ghana has remained polio-free since 2008.

However, officials expressed fear the disease may return as a result of recorded cases in neighbouring countries.

The second round of immunization is slated for October 30.

The exercise is expected to cost over GH¢6 million and targeted at 5.3 million children.
