The Eastern Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), Chief Superintendent James Sarfo Peprah, has urged station officers of commercial transport organizations to ensure that vehicles departing from the stations were not overloaded.
He said for purposes of road safety, all commercial vehicles had been given stipulated number of passengers to carry at a given time according to the weight of the vehicle and therefore any practice contrary to that was breach of the law.
The Regional Commander told the GNA in an interview that it had come to the notice of the police that vehicles took more than required number of passengers and cautioned drivers who indulged in that act to desist or face the law.
Mr Sarfo-Peprah cited mini buses where the front row carried four passengers including the driver’s mate as wrong because the vehicle had been permitted to carry only three passengers.
He said the police would soon mount surveillance at the various lorry stations to deal with recalcitrant drivers who are more interested in their sales than the safety of the passengers**
