Police round up criminals in dawn operation

Accra (Greater Accra), 22 Jan. ’99 –

About 65 people suspected of engaging in criminal activities were today rounded up by a combined team of the Police and the military in the Accra Metropolis in a dawn raid.

The exercise was carried out at Nima, Alajo, Avenor, Dansoman (Tonga), Gbegbeese and Zongo junction from where a number of stolen items were recovered.

The items include television sets, mobile phones, tape recorders and a locally made gun with cartridges.

In addition, 46 bags of Indian Hemp were found in a house at Avenor.

Inspector David Eklu, Acting Head of the Public Relations Directorate, said the aim of the exercise which lasted for about three hours, was to clamp down on criminal activities.

The suspects, including foreigners without valid passports, will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for action to be taken on them.
