The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.
According to a statement released by the police on September 8, Abronye DC was invited to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning and was subsequently taken into custody. He is expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.
Background to the Arrest
The arrest comes after Abronye DC reportedly made derogatory remarks about senior government officials, including alleged comments against the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, whom he described as “dumb and corrupt.”
Earlier reports indicated that police officers had conducted a search at the home of former NPP Youth Organizer Moses Abor in search of Abronye DC. Although he was not found at the time, the search intensified public speculation about the reasons for his arrest.
Asylum Application Adds Twist
This development follows closely after Abronye DC revealed he had applied for political asylum in eight countries—including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, Spain, Italy, and Côte d’Ivoire.
In letters addressed to the respective embassies, he claimed his life was under threat due to ongoing persecution by state security agencies. This revelation has sparked heated debate within Ghana’s political space, with supporters and critics weighing in on the implications.
The police have emphasized that Abronye DC will face the law through due process. His court appearance is expected to clarify the specific charges and provide further details on the case.
Meanwhile, the arrest has stirred strong reactions, with some viewing it as an enforcement of law and order, while others see it as politically motivated.
