Passengers urged to check drivers

Tema, Sept. 11, GNA- Chief Inspector Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, Tema Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, urged passengers to check drivers from committing traffic offences and to report the recalcitrant ones to the police.

He expressed worry that drivers continued to load and offload at unauthorized places, drive on the shoulders of the road, overtake in curves among others, despite efforts by the police to stop these offences.

Chief Inspector Nketia-Yeaboah made the call at a forum on crime and order, organised by Tema Regional members of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA) for members at Tema on Monday.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alice Aboagyewaa, Tema Community One District Crime Officer explained that assault was committed when one put another person in fear of instant attack. ASP Aboagyewaa said, “Assault by imprisonment is committed when you prevent someone from leaving his or her own house under the pretext of arrest.”

She said a person was guilty of stealing when he or she dishonestly appropriated a thing, which he or she was not the owner. ASP Aboagyewaa further explained that “keeping something with a friend and going for it in the person’s absence amounts to stealing.” She advised rape and defilement victims to immediately report to the police their ordeal to enable the police to gather enough evidence for the prosecution of suspects. Miss. Patience Lartey, Tema Regional Secretary of GNTDA, said the association organized the forum to educate its members on crime and order.

She said, “Since nobody is above the law, we need to know what we have to do to be law-abiding citizens.” 11 Sept 07
