Accra, July 2, GNA – Members of Parliament on Friday paid tribute to the memory of the late Mr Lawrence Rosario Abavana, Minister of State in the First Republic.
They said the Statesman left behind a legacy of selflessness, integrity and discipline, which politicians and public servants should emulate.
The MPs were contributing to a statement on the floor of the house by Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, NPP-Navrongo Central.
The member said “Mr Abavana, a teacher, politician and elder statesman has left us with a wealth of resourcefulness and experience that cannot be replaced.”
Mr Adda said Mr Abavana promoted education by initiating the establishment of many schools and colleges, such as the Navrongo Secondary School.
Mr Fredie Blay, the First Deputy Speaker, said the late Mr Abavana dedicated his life to dealing with poverty and illiteracy. Mr Moses Asaga, NDC-Nabdam, said Mr Abavana was instrumental in the establishment of the Northern Scholarship Scheme, which enabled many people in the northern part of the country to acquire education. Captain Nkrabeah Effah-Dartey (RTD) said there was the need for retired statesmen to write their experiences in public life for the benefit of the younger generation.
