Parents urged to spend more time on their children

Kumasi, April 24, GNA – An educationist has deplored the attitude of some parents who abandon their children in favour of their jobs and other preoccupations.

Mr. Joe K. Koranteng, Guidance and Counselling Co-ordinator at the Ashanti Regional Education Office noted that, the home environment has serious influence on the child’s formation and development. He was speaking on the topic: “The Role of Parents in Child Development”, at a day’s lecture organized by the “Youth Delinquency and Career Guidance and Counselling unit of Kristo Asafo Church in Kumasi. Youth groups from the church’s branches in Kumasi, Ejisu, Kumawu, Juaben, Offinso, New Edubiase, Nkenkansu, Obuasi, Dompoase Bekwai and Atobiase attended the lecture.

Mr. Koranteng noted that moral decadence was on the upsurge and tasked parents to take charge and instil moral values and discipline in their children.

He reiterated that the home was the first agent of socialization for the desired growth of the child and admonished parents to recognize and accept this as their primary function. Mr. Christopher Brew, Youth Co-ordinator of the Ashanti Regional Branch of the church, said the programme aimed at helping the youth to appreciate education.
