Over 5,000 teachers to receive salary arrears this month

More than 5,000 teachers across the country are to be paid their outstanding salaries and allowances by the end of September.

It follows the successful validation of their documents by the government.

This will bring to over 10,000, the teachers whose documents have been validated and paid their salary arrears and allowances between August and September this year.

The validation of documents was triggered by delays by the government in paying the outstanding salaries and allowances on grounds that some of the teachers submitted fake documents.

Of the more than 29,000 teachers whose documents are to be validated for payment, about 20,000 have been completed and paid in the last five months since the validation exercise started.

General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers [GNAT], David Ofori Acheampong told TV’s Daniel Opoku Wednesday that any delay to pay the teachers could mar the industrial climate in the country.

“All that we need to do is to tell our people that submit the documents to validate you and pay you. If after the validation it is found out that they are genuine and they don’t pay, then we can also insist on our rights,” he told our reporter.

He added: “So we’re just encouraging our people that let’s wait, after all, we have a deadline of October ending to clear the backlog”.
