Agona Swedru, Aug 31, GNA – More than 12,000 partially blind people in the Central Region have undergone successful surgical operation to get their sight restored.
Dr. Thomas T. Baah, eye specialist in charge of the Breman Asikuma Catholic Hospital, made this known to the Ghana News Agency during an eye camp clinic on Monday at Agona Swedru.
The two-week exercise was organised by Sights Savers and sponsored by Rally International, a British Non-Governmental Organisation.
Dr. Baah listed beneficiaries of the programme as the Assin, Twifo Praso, Mfantsiman, Ajumako, Abura Dunkwa, Gomoa, Awutu-Effutu-Senya and Agona Districts.
He noted that Lower Denkyira and Breman Asikuma Districts have onchocerciasis problems, adding that the high cataract cases in the country was due to excessive sunshine.
Dr. Baah said the government had sent drugs to the districts to combat the disease. The main objective of the clinic was to treat those who are partially blind in the Central Region to enable them to contribute their quota to the development of the nation.
Dr. Baah urged the patients to report their cases to the hospitals and refrain from treating their eye problems with concoctions from herbalists.
