The President of the discredited women’s wing of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), 31st December Women’s Movement, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has accused the Kufuor-led government of acquiring phone-bugging machines for journalists to tap into her and the husband’s phones.
She said as part of its campaign to mount around the clock surveillance on the Rawlingses day-to-day activities, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government imported sophisticated and phone bugging machines from Israel at the cost of several thousands of dollars of the Ghanaian tax payer’s money.
Speaking on a number of commercial radio stations in Kumasi as part of her working visit to the Ashanti region, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings disclosed that three times they had information about the purchase from an Israeli official and soon after that information was relayed to them, the conversation became public. She said some New Patriotic Party journalists have access to those phone tapping machines which they persistently use to dub private conversations between her and her husband as well as other NDC functionaries.
The former first lady said President Kufuor and his NPP government bought those gadgets with the tax payers’ money at the time they claimed the NDC had plunged the economy into chaos and anarchy. She said it was during the same time that President Kufuor called for the adoption of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative.
She said all the machinations of the NPP government to destroy the NDC and its functionaries had so far failed and that peddling of lies had become its stock in trade. Nana Konadu renewed her strong hatred for President John Agyekum Kufuor and all that he stands for, describing the Ghanaian leader as the most corrupt, incompetent, a liar and a President who has presided over the worst form of human rights abuses in the county.
