Accra, Feb. 25, GNA – Solomon Kwame Opoku-Gyan, a student of the University of Ghana, who allegedly conspired with his colleague to enter the University through the back door on Friday appeared at a Circuit Court in Accra.
On Thursday the same court remanded into prison custody a 25 year-old level 400 student of the University of Ghana, William Ekoe Baffoe for entering the University through the back door. When the case was called on Friday, the Prosecution amended the charge sheet and stated that the Police had arrested Opoku-Gyan, a level 100 student of the University as an accomplice.
They are standing trial for intercepting an admission letter of a colleague for Baffoe to use to enter the University. William and Opoku-Gyan have been charged with conspiracy and stealing.
They pleaded not guilty and the Court admitted them to a 60 million-cedi bail each with two sureties. They are to reappear on March 23.
The case as presented by Chief Inspector Mary Agbozo was that Mr Jones Kwao Baffour, a former student of Saint Hubert Seminary School in Kumasi, who had good grades, applied for admission into the University of Ghana.
The University offered Mr Baffour admission but Opoku-Gyan intercepted the admission letter.
Baffoe, who completed Salem Secondary School at Osu in 1998 and obtained aggregate 19 applied for admission but was not admitted. The Prosecution said in 2001 Baffoe followed up to the University and alleged that he met Opoku-Gyan, who promised to look for his admission letter for him if he could pay him two million cedis. The Prosecution said Baffoe alleged that he paid 1.7 million cedis to Opoku-Gyan leaving a balance of 300,000 cedis.
Armed with the letter, Baffoe gained admission into the University but in 2004, the University asked him to submit his educational, baptismal and birth certificates for scrutiny.
Sensing danger, Baffoe rang Mr Baffour at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and disguised himself as his lady friend in United States who had won a United States Diversity Visa that would enable him to obtain a scholarship in America.
Baffoe succeeded in convincing Mr Baffour to release all his documents to him through a friend in Accra.
Baffoe went ahead to swear an affidavit to change his name to Jones Kwao Baffour and presented all the documents to the authorities of the University of Ghana.
The University conducted its own investigation and found that Baffoe was a former student of Salem Secondary School and his real name was William Ekow Baffoe.
