Kumasi, Jan 9, GNA – About 170 women from Asokore-Mampong, Asabi and Buoban areas in the Kumasi metropolis were over the weekend screened freely for breast cancer at Asokore-Mampong.
Six of them have lumps in their breasts and were referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The exercise was organised and funded by the Manhyia Palace in collaboration with the Serwaa Ampem AIDS Foundation for Children, a non-governmental organisation.
A breast cancer specialist from Morocco and a doctor from KATH undertook the screening.
Professor Raja Aghzadi Traki, a member of Moroccan Association for the Fight against Breast Cancer who led the screening team, said her involvement was in response to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu’s recent visit to Morocco where he appealed to the government of Morocco to help with health care delivery in Ghana.
She commended him for his support for health care and education and pledged her association’s support to his programmes. Dr Baffour Awuah, Oncologist and Head of Oncology Department at the KATH, said cases of breast cancer keep increasing every year and called on people to seek early treatment.
Nana Boakye Ansah Debrah, Asokore-Mamponghene, commended Otumfuo for initiating the health programme and urged people, especially women, to visit health facilities regularly for check up.
