Oguaa Assembly urged to enforce sanitation byelaws

Cape Coast, Feb.27, GNA- Mr Frank Adoba, the Central Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), on Thursday, called on the Cape Coast Municipal Assembly (CCMA) to ensure strict enforcement of its byelaws on sanitation in the Municipality. He also appealed to residents in the municipality to keep their surroundings clean in order to promote tourism in the area.

Mr Adoba said it was imperative for residents in the municipality to help ensure clean and healthy surroundings in order to make places more attractive to tourists.

He expressed these sentiments in an address after a four-hour clean-up exercise, organised by the NCCE in collaboration with the Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) and the Cape Coast Municipal Assembly (CCMA).

The exercise which began as early as 0600 hours was undertaken by the men and officers of the Ghana Prisons and the Ghana National Fire Services, members of market women associations, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and some residents, who weeded, swept, and desilted choked gutters at Siwidu, Tantri lorry park and the Kotokuraba and Kotoka market areas.

Mr Adoba said no investor would also want to “invest in a filthy place”, and that since the central region constitutes the hub of the nation’s tourist industry, it was imperative that residents attached importance to sanitation and environmental cleanliness.

Mr Eric Kwakofi, Regional Director of environmental and sanitation unit of the RCC, thanked the participants for coming out in their numbers for the exercise, and urged them to keep up the spirit of voluntarism.
